Selection Process
  • Intake Exam
    • This is a 2 hour exam that measures an applicant's reasoning skills, memory retention, mathematics and English aptitudes
    • All applicants and serving police officers from outside Canada must take this exam
    • Serving police officers from BC are exempt from this exam
  • Exemption Exam
    • Serving Canadian police officers from outside BC must take the Exemption Challenge Exam at the JIBC
  • POPAT
    • This is an obstacle course that measures the overall fitness of the applicant
    • All applicants and serving police officers from outside BC and Canada must pass the POPAT
    • Serving police officers from BC are exempt from the POPAT
  • WVPD Recruiting Section Interview
    • This is a screening interview that covers the content of an applicant's resume, their Exam and POPAT scores; in addition to any issues that are born from these topics
  • Department Application Questionnaire & Integrity Questionnaire
    • These questionnaires cover all aspects of an applicant's life. The questions cover any detected or non-detected criminal activity committed by an applicant.  The West Vancouver Police Department is aware that people make mistakes, mature at different rates and change their behaviour from childhood to adult life.  Full disclosure MUST be made during this stage, and any discrepancy between your answers and information revealed by the background and security process will result in the permanent termination of your application.
  • JIBC Assessment Centre
    • The JIBC Police Academy Assessment Centre provides candidate assessment services to the municipal police departments in BC. Selected WVPD applicants will attend a 1 day assessment session that involves various exercises to measure the abilities of the potential recruit.
  • Fingerprints
    • All applicants MUST submit to a fingerprint check for possible employment
  • WVPD Human Resources Interview
    • This interview will involve a number of the Department's senior level officers who will conduct a comprehensive interview with the applicant
  • Applicant Background Investigation
    • The West Vancouver Police Department's Criminal Investigation Section will conduct an extensive investigation into the applicant's life history.
  • Polygraph Examination
    • Applicants that make it to this stage are required to participate in a polygraph examination
  • Medical Examination
    • Applicants that make it to this stage are required to participate in a medical examination by a designated physician that will render an opinion of whether the applicant is fit for duty
  • Psychological Assessment
    • Applicants that make it to this stage are required to participate in a psychological assessment by a designated physician that will render an opinion of whether the applicant is fit for duty
