| Break and Enter - Civilian Arrest - Update |
A 45 year old Vancouver man will remain in custody pending a further court appearance in connection with a break and enter in West Vancouver Saturday in which a suspect was confronted and apprehended by a business owner.
Shortly after 7:00pm Saturday, March 27, 2010, the owner of a chiropractic office in the 100 block of Taylor Way found a side entry door to his office pried open.
Accompanied by his 70 year old father and 66 year old mother, the 39 year old male owner entered and found a male suspect inside. The suspect was apprehended and held by the owner and his father and police were called.
Officers attended within minutes, arresting the suspect, who was found to have suffered cuts and abrasions in the struggle with the business owner.
The suspect is subject of Provincial radius arrest warrants in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. WVPD officers are liaising with agencies in those provinces to determine whether the warrants will be extended.
Crown Counsel has approved charges of Break and Enter and Possession of Break In Instruments against 45 year old Gary Arthur BYERS of Vancouver. BYERS will remain in custody pending a further court appearance by video conference April 06, 2010.
Despite this matter ending with an arrest, West Vancouver Police do not recommend direct confrontation of criminal suspects by members of the public.
Offenders can carry weapons and physical confrontations with suspects can also carry the risk of transmission of communicable or blood borne illnesses. Police are trained for such risks and prepared to face those risks on behalf of the communities officers serve.
If you arrive to find an apparent break in at your home or business, call police immediately and move yourself to a safe position to observe and report any persons leaving. Officers can attend and ensure safety of the premise prior to any entry by members of the public.. |
