Another weekend of the West Vancouver Police Christmas Counter Attack on impaired drivers resulted in more alcohol and drug impaired drivers being safely removed from the road, including one man who will face recommended charges for driving while impaired by Heroin.

Another 12 drivers saw their vehicles heading down the road on the back of a tow truck as a result of extra enforcement this weekend. Nine of the 24 hour roadside prohibitions were for alcohol, three were for impairment by drugs.

That is in addition to the ongoing focus of West Vancouver Police Patrol Officers on impaired driving.

Patrol Team members responded Saturday morning to reports of a vehicle repeatedly colliding with roadside barriers while crossing Lions Gate Bridge.

The vehicle was subsequently found stopped on Marine Dr. near Taylor Way, with the driver unconscious behind the wheel.

After further investigation, including evaluation of the driver by a West Vancouver Officer with Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) training, investigators determined the driver was under the influence of Heroin.

West Vancouver Police will recommend a charge of Impaired Driving. The driver was also served a 24 hour Driving Prohibition and a Provincial Violation Ticket for 'No Driver's Licence'.

Overall, since December 1st, Five drivers have been arrested by West Vancouver Police to face recommended Criminal Charges for Impaired Driving or Drive While Over .08.

45 drivers have been served with 24 hour Driving Prohibitions due to alcohol, Four drivers have been served 24 hour Driving Prohibitions for Drug Impairment.

If you observe any vehicle being driven in a manner that makes you suspect the driver is impaired, West Vancouver Police encourage you to immediately call 911 for a police response.

West Vancouver Police encourage all drivers to consider safe alternatives as they celebrate the holiday season, non-drinking designated drivers, transit, or taxis, or to consider community based safe driving services such as Operation Red Nose.

North Shore Rotary Clubs will continue to provide “safe rides home” on Dec. 18, 19 and 31, between 9 pm and 3 am. Volunteers drive you and your car home for free. Donations are welcome and proceeds support North Shore youth programs.
